It seems to me important that DOMA was struck down on equal-protection grounds rather than states-rights grounds. The latter would have been more conservative; the former starts setting up the same-sex marriage issue as a matter of equal protection rather than a matter for state political discretion.

I like to think the rest of it is a matter of settled law already thanks to Loving v Virginia. (Has there ever been a more nigh-eponymous name for a court case?)
