It's a federal court, and the decision was based on the 14th Amendment, which isn't a cause which has been endorsed by the Supreme Court (yet). So it's hardly a done deal. It's not even tremendously surprising that it's in Utah, because the judge's attitudes aren't necessarily representative of Utahans.
But... The SC is gonna have a hard time dodging the central equal-protection issue now, unless the appeals court reverses the district court. The appeals court is the 10th circuit court, which I don't think has been heard from yet.
