Autonomous Fighting Robot competition. This is all way beyond my general skill level, but it might be a fun intense thing to dive into it with a team. *idle pondering*
Whereas that's the part that seems easiest to me, although not getting to real robotics.
There are a lot of hobbyists in the microcontroller area now. I know several people with no electronics or programming experience to speak of who've built useful projects with Anduino kits. And of course, Lego Mindstorms have been around for nearly two decades now, and sponsor their own (kids') robot leagues.
Hmmm.... Could one build a programmable fighting-robot-building machine? Then you could evolve better fighting robots based on mutation and selection (combat success).
