Trying to figure out where to go on vacation for a few days - possibly late Sept? - with an older relative.
Things that are desirable in a vacation:
  • train travel
  • gambling
  • sitting by a pool doing nothing

Things that are contraindicated or not particularly desirable:
  • lots of walking (she has a bad knee)
  • very long plane flights (again, knee)

I'd suggest a day train down to DC but much of what's interesting in DC requires substantial walking. A trip to NYC is also interesting but there's a choice between lots of walking and cabs everywhere. She loves Aruba but that's a long flight to sit. Las Vegas is a long flight but a desirable destination. *flail* *indecision*

Not the UK.

Vegas of course. Had a fun time there, economy has recovered so the guilt factor is at an all time low. Go and enjoy.

That was actually one of the things I was considering, but a couple of casinos are closing, so I was thinking maybe it was on too much of a downswing.

How many casinos do you need?

There's a terrific beach (sitting on which has many of the same characteristics as sitting by the pool), and there's lots to see on the Boardwalk (and an infinite number of hand-pushed "cabs", to minimize walking). And since the casinos are pretty much interchangeable, I don't see how it matters whether there are 9 or 12.

Also plenty of cheezy tourist-trap shopping and plenty of upscale hoity-toity shopping, all accessible directly from the Boardwalk, in case that appeals.

I am not sure, but there isn't a direct train to Montreal any more. So sad.... They now bus from somewhere in VT.

Still, Montreal isn't a long flight, and it is awesome.

Can't train to Montreal without going through NYC, which is a bit out of the way.

You can train back from Montreal with a change in Albany, though!

(OK, so it requires the Lake Shore Limited to be two hours late. What are the odds it isn't, though? (I went and checked. Average 187 minutes late over the last four weeks.))

Ah, yes. The Lake Shore Limited. Glad to see it is as reliable as ever.

There's short weekend long ocean liner cruises that leave from Boston or NYC. You might be able to book one if you try now.

Seconding the cruise idea. You can get pools and gambling, but it's a bit harder to get the trains part.

The cruise idea sounds good. There are a number of them from one that simply wanders around the harbor here in Boston to one that goes to Nova Scotia from Portland (possibly one from Boston).

Also, a train ride to Niagara Falls would get you to a place where you could gamble on a boat.

DC is workable for the mobility-challenged, you just need to know which museums can cope with a "hey, can you guys loan us a wheelchair?", or else bring one of your own.

I can tell you that the Udvar-Hazy annex at Dulles yanked that service a while ago, which was a bummer to find out after we'd already gotten there with a mobility-issue family member.

Also suggesting a cruise. Boat instead of train, but a pool to sit by and gambling, plus much better food than on a train.

Hmm. There's gambling on the ferry boats from Maine to Nova Scotia. Maybe you could put something together in that direction.

You can take a train to Portland if you take one of the cruises from there.
