From what I have read, most of these "geek cruise" type things involve adding stuff to a base of "standard cruise line stuff". So there's always the option of falling back on the default non-themed cruise activities.
I was looking into it for an astronomy cruise at one point, where they had guest lecturers, and made a point of taking the boat far away from any light pollution for observation. There's also archaeological ones, again with guest lecturers, and discussion of interesting ruins (and available tours) in the ports they stopped at.
There's a decent-sized community of people around DC that have gone multiple times, to include The Girl, who is currently trying to convince me to go on the next one.
I don't know that I can say anything beyond "if you're the kind of person that likes that sort of thing, that's the sort of thing you might like". I dunno, imagine a con that goes on for a week, takes place on a boat, and costs as much as a good used truck?
Yeah it's that last bit that keeps me off these things. The cost is non-trivial and I'm just not sure I want that level of engagement, rather than a cruise TO somewhere I'd like to go.
The cruise we went on last November was, frankly, pretty destination-agnostic. We puttered around in Nassau for a few hours, but that was it.
Having a balcony room was huge, because it meant we could hang out and have the "we're on the ocean! and it's warm!" experience without having to deal with other humans (happily, the folks with a bluetooth speaker next door had good choices in music).
It's pricey, but we're also thinking of making it a long-delayed honeymoon.
