i've often had the chance to drink liquor older than i am. i have a bottle of whiskey that was born the same year i was, and i was born in november, so i figure the chances are good that it's older than me by at least a bit.

but oh my god. someone (and i never heard who -- for all i know it might've been anonymous) donated a bottle of port to the festivities yesterday. it was bottled in 1926. NINETEEN TWENTY SIX.

that's older than my parents!

and oh god, it was the most amazing tasting liquor i've ever had. velvet is not that smooth. silk is not that smooth. wow.

the port!

That was the _most_ amazing alcoholic beverage I have ever tasted...

It was, in fact, from Ben's father's father. He gave it to Ben's parents (we are not sure exactly when) "to be used on a special occasion." Various special occasions in Ben's family came and went, and somehow the port always was forgotten. No one in Ben's family is much of a drinker (Ben doesn't drink at all), so it's not surprising.

Ben's mother offered to bring it to the wedding a couple of days ago, and I'm afraid I was relatively nonchalant about the whole thing. "Oh, um, sure, if you want to." Of course, I _was_ a bit preoccupied at the time :)

I am told that there was a flock of elboid vultures circling the bottle before it was finally opened. And I owe Michelle a BIG thank you for saving me a glass (the opening occured while I was changing out of my wedding dress.)

and by the way, my parents were both born in 1926... and that is when Ben's father's parents were married

AHA! that makes perfect sense, then. it was quite impressive, and clearly this was a fine and special occasion for it to be used on, especially if that's the year ben's grandparents were married and your parents were born.

Just curious - did anyone save the bottle and note who the maker was?

I was told the bottle got safely stored away. But there was no maker on it, apparently! I didn't get to scrutinize it closely. But it was distributed by the "Reliable Coffee Company", if I recall correctly.

Ann, the cork and seal were each in several pieces on a table when I was clearing up. They're saved in a plastic bag if you want them. Otherwise I shall open it and inhale occasionally. ;-)
