last night, i watched the series premieres for "commander in chief", "how i met your mother", and "kitchen confidential"

commander in chief: i have had, for a long time, a huge crush on gena davis. she's adorable, she does that competent-and-sexy (because competence is sexy, dammit) thing so very well, and she looked really good in that white outfit during the second half of "commander in chief" because of both the collar and the neckline. but i digress. i want to like this show. because gena davis is in it! and kyle secor (my boy bayliss! from "homicide") is getting work!

but oh gosh. the mediocrity. the ABSOLUTELY FUCKING UNSUBTLENESS OF ANVILS BEING DROPPED ON THE AUDIENCE TO MAKE THEIR FUCKING POINT. also, my expectations for verisimilitude in white house drama have been raised by sorkin-era "west wing". and CiC is not meeting those. i don't expect "i'll need to meet with important people in congress", i want "i'll need to meet with (title) (title) (name) (name) (name) (title) and, yeah, (other-name)." that's not the only example of the problem, but it's indicative of it. oh, and if the protocol officer was actually a protocol officer, i would expect them to be doing a better job of introducing secor to his role. and donald sutherland could only look more evil if they actually put him in a darth vader mask to go with his wheezing.

i'll give it another episode or two, to see if they develop some nuance. because it could be spiffy. but so far i'm pretty unimpressed.

"how i met your mother" was a total surprise -- it was funny, it was clever, there was one joke that made claudia_ and i laugh so hard we had to stop and rewind because we'd missed several more lines of dialogue (the first bit of dialogue after we see the eye patch). i will definitely watch this again when i can. i'm not sure they can sustain the meta-plot, but i have hopes.

"kitchen confidential" also has potential. i'm hoping andrea parker is a recurring character, but what's-his-name-who-played-will-on-alias is solid, the rest of the cast is okay. ("don't send me back to utah! have you seen the food out there?") they shouldn't be so clean at the end of a shift, but in general it seems to be having fun.

Too clean, kitchen too calm during service, and they don't use their tongs enough. Not following servsafe rules either, tasting with plastic spoons that get tossed and wearing latex gloves most of the time.NO sanitation buckets on the counters. Other than that I'm liking the show, they certainly have the right attitudes. Not enough hispanics i the kitchen

i suspect some serious hollywood demographic wrangling there. "well, we don't want to be a latino show. but we have those asian fellows doing the fish. they're ethnic, right?"
