the bit flipped.

if i'm just a big state machine, there's a bit flip that changes between "wow, my house is kind of messy. i should do something about that." and "HOLY FUCK MY HOUSE IS A GIANT PIT! I MUST DEAL RIGHT THE FUCK NOW."

yeah, that bit.

*sigh*

i'm a slob.

i'm generally very good on things about organics in the house -- things usually move between the sink and the dishwasher reasonably frequently, there's no rotting food lurking about or anything (modulo the grain moth problem over the summer, but i dealt pretty harshly once i noticed it) -- but when it comes to inanimate non-food things, i'm a slob.

and i have to admit i've gotten better than i used to be, and i think that bitflip i describe above happens sooner than it used to, but yeah... it's shifted from midly cluttered to "must deal now"

There must be something in the air. Mine flipped a couple of days ago, HARD. Mr candle_light got the brunt of my unhappiness about the state of the house. I've progressed through grouching about it to Throwing Shit Out.

I'm a slob too -- which is why I have a cleaning person in every two weeks -- and if I could I'd have her in more often! but there is something so _nice_ about coming in and seeing that everything has been picked up, cleaned thouroughly and dusted, wiped, etc.

It also helps having osmeone in every so often, as you start getting into a habit of keeping things more picked up as well.

I wish tho, I could get good about putting my clean clothes away. I'm terrible about hanging and folding.

Me, too. :-)

There must be something in the air because I've been in that state this weekend.

Beyond that, you know that any time you want help with cleaning, organizing, etc. I will happily do a few hours here and there for you, my gracious basement storage provider :)

I'm home in Boston every other week.

well, you probably know that we have problems in this area, too...

I hear that having a cleaning service come in every 2 weeks or so is a huge help, because you have to pick up for them. I sincerely hope to be able to test this hypothesis, but a lot of sh*t needs to be moved first (I'll spare you the Relationship Woes Rant...)

sigh.

yeah, i've had a cleaner in sporadically, but not for a while.

i should do so again, really.

I think it happens around when we start closing the windows and spending more time inside. Suddenly I realize "fuck! I have to live in here with all this crap all winter long, I can't just go outside and avoid it.

I feel your pain.

My bit flips when things stick to my socks. A piece of dropped orzo, a stray chunk of cruft, whatever -- it drives me crazy, and there's a short fuse between brushing my sock off on my leg and snapping.

I'm contemplating mopping tonight now that the vacuum is fixed. My bit flipped yesterday. Can't stand it.

Ooh, I hate that, too. Last night I suddenly had to drop everything and sweep the kitchen and living rooms.

You have inspired me to reduce my own clutter. I have two rooms down, 3 more to go (not including closets or the basement, yet).

I don't think I could manage if I didn't have my once-every-2-weeks cleaning service. They dust/vaccum/mop floors/straighten up piles. It forces me to put a load of dishes in the dishwasher just so the cleaners don't pile things up and break stuff. It forces me to sort thru my mail to find the bills, becauose otherwise they'd get sorted into a pile that I would have to search through. The bed gets made with new sheets. The bathroom gets cleaned. The kitchen gets cleaned. Yes, the house remains cluttered, but at least all the clutter is in nice neat piles instead of strewn all over the place, so it's easier to just grab a pile and start sorting if I get the urge.

I just cleared out two of our three garage bays and sorted through about 20 or so boxes of crap we kept shuttling from room to room when we needed to use a certain room.

Maybe it's in the air?

In fact, I was so intent on doing this that I made [livejournal.com profile] smeehrrr take off a few days of work so we could get it done (you know, pesky toddlers, one has to watch them).

can't you just put him out with a collar and leash on the dog run with the pups?

... but enough about smeehrrr, what about the toddler?

We have someone clean also, so most of the public spaces are OK. But she is banned from two VERY SCARY rooms: "The-rooms-whose-doors-must-not-be-opened"

Us too! Doing party prep has led to a truckload of debris being hauled off, a carload of crupht going to Goodwill, and about 10 bags of trash going out on the curb! I have a studio again! and P's laser lab is all cleaned out! Of course there are stillthe garage and basement to be dealt with at our leisure, but the living areas are much improved.

I got hit with that too. Spent 4 hot sweaty hours partially emptying out the "spare" room. My
car is now sagging with cruft.

I have been struck with the autumn cruft purge urge as well; the loads of stuff we got rid of before the move back to New England just wasn't sufficient, since we have much less storage space here.

If you ever want a very convincing incentive to get rid of stuff, I suggest My Brother's Keeper (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/083760429X/qid=1128874438/sr=1-7/ref=sr_1_7/103-5023938-2283809?v=glance&s=books), by Marcia Davenport. I reread it recently, and it's just as riveting as it was the first time. The first Amazon review describes the plot pretty well, but doesn't emphasize the material aspects enough - that they basically ended up burying themselves in their house, with all their possessions, long before they died.
