sigh. the thing that's worse than something running without a UPS is something running with a so-called "UPS" that dies when line power dies and doesn't come back up when line power is re-established. i'm gonig to relabel it "IPS"

mutter mutter kvetch.

home again now, anyways.

actually, fairly mellow as outages go. most things came back up when power came back. i had to fsck a couple of machines (which required me to bug other people trying to get the root password) but i figured nobody was going to be using them till tomorrow so if they weren't up, oh well.

But why do problems always want to be solved with fire? Fire good. Beer also good.

Possibly an overabundance of Yin fluids. Possibly also issues with Qi. Hard to say.

oh, the timing could've been way worse. i've got people coming over in a little while.

in case things took longer than i expected them to, i did leave a note on the door saying "had to go to the office. if you have keys, come on in and make yourself at home and feel free to host"

Always seems to happen on Christmas.

I sometimes wonder about the value of UPS units: We have 6kva APC Symetras acting as ballast in our racks. Last week we did an EPO test (disabled the "power off the UPS too" but dropped the breakers) and beforehand I had the guys do a runtime calibration. "We do it every weeeeek Chris!". Well I made them do it by hand.

Replaced 20 battery packs. Apparently their "test" was a simple transfer to battery, then back. Saved a *LOT* of grief otherwise.

Moral: Never trust anything. Second moral: UPS units are fickle things.

glad you're home. we're going to try to trundle by before heading to the sit-down thing we have at 6:30. but given that we're still in pyjamas at LSE, and it's 2pm... you know, it's iffy.

Happy Christmas in case I don't see you later today!
