sigh. the thing that's worse than something running without a UPS is something running with a so-called "UPS" that dies when line power dies and doesn't come back up when line power is re-established. i'm gonig to relabel it "IPS"
mutter mutter kvetch.
home again now, anyways.
actually, fairly mellow as outages go. most things came back up when power came back. i had to fsck a couple of machines (which required me to bug other people trying to get the root password) but i figured nobody was going to be using them till tomorrow so if they weren't up, oh well.

Date: 2006-12-25 06:33 pm (UTC)in case things took longer than i expected them to, i did leave a note on the door saying "had to go to the office. if you have keys, come on in and make yourself at home and feel free to host"

Date: 2006-12-25 06:40 pm (UTC)I sometimes wonder about the value of UPS units: We have 6kva APC Symetras acting as ballast in our racks. Last week we did an EPO test (disabled the "power off the UPS too" but dropped the breakers) and beforehand I had the guys do a runtime calibration. "We do it every weeeeek Chris!". Well I made them do it by hand.
Replaced 20 battery packs. Apparently their "test" was a simple transfer to battery, then back. Saved a *LOT* of grief otherwise.
Moral: Never trust anything. Second moral: UPS units are fickle things.
