i'm still a bit uncertain about depp in the title role, but after looking at the trailer linked off the official site, i'm beginning to think that HBC may be inspired casting.

release date is 12/21.

that trailer makes me squee.

I'm cautiously optimistic, though the trailer certainly downplays the musical aspect of it.

i am charmed by the fact that HBC allegedly took both singing lessons and baking lessons to prepare for the role.

I have yet to see Johnny Depp do a poor job at what he's tried, so I'm expecting it to be very good. But, I'm not biased by having previously see Little Shop Of Horrors or Sweeny Todd, so I won't know any better.

/agree

I hated Depp on the small screen and was surprised how much I liked him on the movie screen. Just about everything he's done - even in bad movies - has been watchable, good, or very good.

I think he was good in 21 Jump Street. I also think he was very young at the time, too, though. So in comparison to his later work, perhaps not so good, but, still well above the general bar.

Graphic Bloody Violence indeed!

I saw it on Broadway (the reviival in 1989) with Bob Gunton in the title role. He was wonderful. The NYT review said this:

"The director has assembled a cast almost as impressive as the Broadway company, with the brilliant performance of Bob Gunton in the title role, surpassing even Len Cariou's iron portrayal in the original cast. Hollow-eyed and zombie-like, ignited by an unappeasable lust for vengeance, Mr. Gunton projects an intensity that at moments borders on seizure."

A tough act for Mr. Depp to follow.
