okay, i work out in newton in an office park, and the parking lot is big and kind of full. and people seem to have no qualms about parking in the fire lanes, but i don't roll that way, maaaaaaaaan. otoh, people are very conscientious afaict about not parking in the handicapped spots. and it doesn't seem like there's anyone regularly using them, since they are usually completely unoccupied.

now, my knee is kind of fucked up, still. some days it's better than others, still, but i have no idea how long i can expect this to be going on. and the snow is coming and a new tenant is moving into the office building and both of these things mean parking will get EVEN TIGHTER soon.

and so i asked the hr folks, "hey, i'm temporarily not-quite-so-abled-bodied. can i get a temporary pass to park in the handicapped spots here?" because, honestly, i don't feel the need to park in handicapped spots generally -- i just don't want to haul my laptop bag for a quarter of a mile from the ass end of the auxilliary parking lot when my knee's bugging me. and we had those before we moved back at the old building. or maybe back when we had the old HR staff. anyways, the hr folks asked the building management who said "oh, no, you have to get something from the registry or your doctor".

so i improvised with visio and some adhesive faux-lamination plastic sheets.

*hugs*

How was the MRI yesterday? I'm guessing that you don't know much. AFAIK, your doctor can, in fact, give you a letter or even issue a temporary tag (Mt. Auburn has them, I know). You did a great job on the one you made :)

yeah, i figure i'll ask about a real one next time i'm at the doctors'. but in the mean time, i figure this will do. i made it the other day, but have found reasonable parking in the mornings since then so i haven't actually used it yet. :-)

mri was fine. i have a bunch of cool images of my leg, since i asked them to give me a cd of it as well as sending it off to the docs. my god, i'm made of meat. (gotta get some screenshots of the mri stuff)

i'll know more after my next appt. i'm hoping it'll be something like "here's a steroid shot and a marine-corps-DI-inspired physical therapist for a while" rather than arthroscopy, but i think i'm hoping in vain.

If you're into this sort of thing, they gave me a videotape of my arthro (http://zorak.best.vwh.net/arthroscopy/).

From what I've previously heard, your HR people sound even worse than the usual run of HR folks.

Go you!

Given the number of completely able-bodied people that I see park in handicapped spots with handicapped thingies hanging from their mirrors, I'm very happy that someone who actually has a problem getting around is using handicapped spots.

Please, though, let's not talk about the snow coming.

There are plenty of disabilities which aren't obvious or visible. Because someone looks able bodied doesn't mean they are.

I'm aware of that. It still seems that many people park in handicapped spots who don't need to.

there's one handicapped spot outside the entrance to the suite I'm in that's usually occupied by one particular car that has a handicap placard. People there are generally good about not parking in them without proper ID. (Unlike my hometown in NJ, where the handicap slots at various businesses and strip malls all seem to be full of self-important twits who'll "be back in a minute".)

I hope your knee gets better soon, so you won't have to worry about this.

And yeah, if they open one more office in that building, that parking lot is going to be full and then some. I wonder if they've started looking into offsite parking again.

The ones you get are a lot easier to fake than the ones we get. Ours are either red or blue plastic mirror hangers, not a flimsy piece of paper in laminate like that.

Love the signature!

When M had a broken leg and was going around in crutches we looked into getting short-term handicapped services, like use of the MBTA pick-up van and parking passes. It takes so long after you apply before you get approval (I believe it was four weeks) it was not worth the hassle. Which I believe is the point.
