So, last week or so, I finished up my taxes and filed them electronically. And I had a payment coupon for the state (I owe money to MA but not the feds), and so I wrote out a check when I did my other bills and had it in the stack of bills to go out on Monday.

And Monday morning, I picked up the stack of letters to go out, stuck them in my pocket, went to work and dropped them in the mail while I was there, content in having gotten my payment in the mail a couple of days in advance.

Tonite, I got home and was putting stuff away in the fridge when I happened to look at the corner of the kitchen table. Where there was a letter sitting with postage and return address. Addressed to the MA Department of Revenue.

One quick trip to the Fort Point post office, and I was set. But still. There was some "OH GOD DOOM WAS AVERTED" panic, there.

I am reliably informed that every tax day, there are sacks and sacks and sacks of "mailed on time" returns, payments and forms that won't even get opened (the sacks, never mind the envelopes) for weeks, and that if you don't get yours to the post office by midnight on April 15th, nothing like DOOM is likely to descend.

oh, i'm sure. and if i hadn't gotten it in yesterday and they did carefully inspect my envelope to discover that it had been mailed today, the penalties are likely to be pretty damned trivial from what i recall of dealing with tax screw-ups.

it was mostly the dissonance of thinking it was safely in the mail with days to spare and suddenly realizing that, in fact, it was sitting right there on my kitchen table.

The first year S and I were married, we did our taxes and discovered that we owed the state about $15. I suggested we send them a pizza and call it good. (We didn't, of course, but we went into work and adjusted all the deduction things accordingly.)
