got a kindle. yay! ([livejournal.com profile] clauclauclaudia and i have hers & hers kindles. mine's white, hers is black, so as to avoid the "hey, is this mine or yours?)

so, I have a question for kindle-owners! what do you like as far as kindle cases?

Not about cases, but one thing to consider is putting both kindles on the same Amazon account so that you can share books. Mike and I both have nooks on my B&N account so that we don't end up having to buy books twice since we both read a lot of the same stuff.

And, yay! ;-)

I found a satisfactory one on ebay.

What makes it satisfactory? Rigid case? Thick? Thin? With or without light?

I'm not clear how fragile the kindle is and if I would do better with something more rigid or if I should just be worrying about minor bumps and scratches. For the short term, I gave [livejournal.com profile] clauclauclaudia a little leather folio thing that fits a kindle-sized notepad for now as a temporary case, and am going to dig up a second similar leather folder I've got hanging around somewhere in the back of the car for myself.

The kindle doesn't seem to be very fragile, but the plastic is a bit soft; mine has scratched cosmetically in a couple of places. The case is thin, stiff but not rigid, without a light. I find that the same light that's good for reading a book is generally fine for the kindle, with the exception that the screen can reflect glare more often than paperback pages (but probably less than a glossy magazine would). I put the kindle in the case upside down, because otherwise the corner-straps that hold it in obscure a key I found important - that's definitely something that may differentiate a satisfactory case from a good one. I made sure to get a case that had a pocket for sticking paper in, but I've never used it so maybe that shouldn't have been a priority.

I just toss mine in my backpack, but I've only had one for a couple months, so remains to be seen if this policy will come back and bite me. It doesn't seem very fragile.

My mom whipped one together from some heavyweight fabric and a bit of padding. It's like a pocket-shaped potholder, with a nice flap. I'm careful not to crush the kindle, but it does fine in my backpack. A layer of cardboard with the padding would make it even sturdier.

Mom: "I wasn't going to pay $30 for a cover!"

yeah, but your mom has mad skillz.

i might have sufficient skills unto the task. perhaps i'll try it out during my two weeks of sloth. :)

I don't have a kindle, but do have a nook. I got a rigid cover for my nook that covers only the front (leaving the back (and the pretty skin I got for it) mostly exposed) and find that fairly ideal for my circumstances. It protects the screens, but doesn't add much in the way of bulk so that reading in bed is a lovely experience. :)

I happen to really like the Kindle lighted cover.

It's a bit expensive and add a little bit of bulk, but the fact that it makes my Kindle useful in the dark and the light is parasitically powered (no extra battery!) won me over.

My kindle goes everywhere with me in its M-Edge Latitude jacket. Available from Amazon and many other online sources, but I picked mine up retail from Staples, which carries a lot of M-Edge and other Kindle accessories.
