When my neurologist showed me my MRIs of my brain, and started to explain to me about the congenital defect it revealed (the uneven hemispheric sizes), I asked him a whole bunch of relevant questions about brain function and how this could develop. In the middle he stopped me, and said, ’You know, you are really...well, most people that I have to explain this sort of thing with are a lot more upset.’

I told him that maybe I would be, later, but being upset could wait until I was home with the boyfriend, and it was a really fascinating thing - and why should I waste time on being upset? I could be upset on my own time, but I had a world-class neurologist there to ask about this right then.

I also remember saying to him, ’I actually think that most of my friends would probably approach this the same way. It might be unusual in all os society, but I bet it isn’t unusual in my social group.’

So yeah. It took me what, 7 years for a similar experience to happen, but thank you for proving my thought ;-)

*laughs* "I can be upset on my own time for free, but dude, I'm *paying* for your time!"

well, no...I was in ontario at the time, so I had one of the world experts in my disorder to play with, and no cost to me.

*but* it did seem to take 6 months to get to see him (which was more an effect of the fact he was at a teaching hospital, did a lot of research, and was, well, one of the experts in the seizure disorder I have rather than the mythical socialized medicine gateway...I could usually get to see my family doctor in under 4 weeks, depending when I called.)

Reminds me of the woman with whom I discussed which parts of her brain they hacked out to remove the cancer, and why it didn't damage her language facilities, as was expected. Of course, she was an engineer, so it wasn't so surprising.
