The Washington Post has published an article that's a pretty good overview of the situation with Syria.
but.
The Washington Post has published an article suggesting teachers shouldn't be jailed for fucking their underage students.

Did they have to maintain a quota of suck or something?

seriously...how nuanced is it that you don't fuck your students, whether they want it or not, and it's rape if you do? I don't care if she walked into his house naked with "Do me" written on her body. There is no such thing as consent with such a power and age differential

(Quite seriously...) What is the current definition of "rape"? Back when I was a boy, it was fairly straightforward, there was "forcible rape", sex without actual consent, and there was "statutory rape", consensual sex with one party under the age of consent (and the penalties for the two were quite different). But it seems that "rape" is used with a different meaning now.

Rape is sex without consent. Under aged folks are by definition unable to meaningfully consent.

Oh....kay.

Wow. Uh.

I think I comprehend what the author is saying, but, er, way to miss a whole lot of significant points.

(But, yes, the 9 Questions about Syria article is awesome.)

Honestly, that's worth remembering.
No, I don't agree with her.

I don't know if it was there earlier, but looking at the opinion piece now, I see a link at the bottom: "The Post’s View: Judge in Montana student rape case should be removed"

Oh, great.

"6. Why hasn’t the United States fixed this yet?

Because it can’t. There are no viable options. Sorry.

The military options are all bad. [details]

The one political option, which the Obama administration has been pushing for, would be for the Assad regime and the rebels to strike a peace deal. But there’s no indication that either side is interested in that, or that there’s even a viable unified rebel movement with which to negotiate."

About the best spin I can put on that article is to highlight the clause “When I was growing up in the 1960s and ’70s...”

In the context of an era where adult women were in many ways treated like minors (various restrictions on abortion, legalized marital rape, requiring husband’s consent to get a credit card, etc.), then a teenager having sex with a teacher doesn’t seem quite as bad as it does today.
